All You Need To Know: LAUT. Smoke Shabu Grill Buffet in Changi

Nestled by the sea within Changi Beach Club, LAUT Smoke Shabu Grill Buffet is an outdoor charcoal grill and hotpot experience that offers a vast array of seafood, meats, and even sashimi, all in a self-service format.

LAUT Smoke Shabu Grill Buffet is an experience best suited for those who enjoy a wide variety of food options and an unpretentious, al fresco atmosphere by the sea. Here is all you need to know from my experience there!

LAUT has a large variety including a generous spread of seafood and meats to a decent selection of hot dishes. I was quite shocked by the variety of options to choose from.

Meat Selection

meat options at laut

There are 2 refrigerators of meats for hotpot and grilling with marinated and non-marinated options.

These include:

  • Beef Short Plate Slice
  • Mixed Herb Beef
  • Black Pepper Pork Belly
  • Pork Belly Slices
  • Beef Bulgogi
  • Spicy Chicken
  • BBQ Pork
  • BBQ Chicken
  • Chinese Marinated Chicken
  • Chicken Wings
  • Shoyu Chicken
  • Spicy Chicken Wings

While the buffet includes “shabu” in the name, the meat cuts here are lean and thick —better suited for grilling than a traditional shabu-shabu style in my opinion. Even the thinly sliced pork was not really typical shabu style thin.

Seafood Selection

There is a wide variety of seafood including:

  • Scallops
  • Oysters
  • Tiger Prawn
  • Big Head Prawn
  • Crayfish
  • Crab
  • Salmon
  • Shishamo
  • Squid
  • Cooked prawns
  • Clams
  • Salmon Sashimi

Do note that their oysters are not suitable for eating raw and need to be cooked. They also had a container of shredded cheese for you to add to your scallop before grilling which was a really nice touch that not many other places have.

Vegetables & Others

The vegetable fridge is well stocked with mushrooms, vegetables, hotpot essentials such as crab stick, cheese tofu, hot dog, sweet potato noodles, meatball and more.

They also had some cut fruits like watermelon. However, it didn’t have lettuce, which is a BBQ essential for me.

Condiments

Similar to many hotpot buffet places, LAUT Smoke Shabu Grill had a DIY condiment station for you to create your favourite sauces for hotpot and BBQ.

They even had garlic butter which was really nice paired with the grilled seafood and meats!

Cooked Food

There is a section for cooked food with items such as roasted lamb shoulder, roasted beef brisket, fried long beans, steam fish and a bunch of finger foods like nuggets.

I believe this is a rotating menu and not the same dishes are served every day. Did not eat much of this as I wanted to focus on trying the seafood and grill options. However, I think it is ideal for guests with children to have something to start off with while waiting for other items to cook!

Standard staple items such as white rice and fried rice are also available.

Drinks & Desserts

There are 6 drink choices from the dispensers:

  • Peach Tea
  • Water Chestnut & Sugar Cane
  • Blackcurrant Juice
  • Orange Juice
  • Water
  • Fruit Punch

It looks similar to the drink dispensers at other buffet places like La Jiang Shan Hotpot Buffet.

For dessert, the offerings are somewhat limited compared to the main course selection. There is a fridge with some packaged ice cream which I did not try.

Ambience & Atmosphere

laut smoke shabu grill seaside dining

The seaside view is one of the restaurant’s highlights. I recommend coming earlier and requesting for a table closer to the outer edges of the dining area. The ventilation closer to the centre tends to be poor, and when the restaurant fills up, the smoke from the charcoal grills can start to linger and sting your eyes.

It can feel a bit chaotic when busy, especially with guests moving around to pick up food from the extensive spread since almost everything is self-service including soup for the hotpot.

The seating area is quite far from the food area too, so expect to walk quite a bit to get everything you need for your meal – including utensils, bowls and plates. It would be nice to have a tray so fewer trips are needed. I think I walked a total of 5 times to and fro to get everything we needed.

Getting To LAUT

entrance to changi beach club

The nearest bus stop requires a few minutes walk from the beach club. There’s limited parking in Changi Beach Club, so arriving early is recommended. Non-members are only allowed to park in white-marked spaces.

There is not much clear signage on where the restaurant is after parking. We entered the club reception and only saw a sign inside there pointing us to go down a flight of stairs, you’ll need to navigate a few flights of stairs, which could be a challenge for anyone with mobility concerns.
