Trying Burmese Cuisine at Inle Myanmar Restaurant

Singapore’s diverse food scene often brings together flavours from all corners of the world. I’ve tried many different cuisines in Singapore, but have never tried Burmese cuisine before.

Recently, I’ve been in the City Hall area more often for classes and discovered that Peninsula Plaza has lots of Burmese restaurants. Decided to give Burmese food a taste at Inle Myanmar Restaurant.

Inle Myanmar Restaurant seems to offer a wide range of traditional Burmese dishes, from hearty soups, salads and dishes.

The menu offered both ala carte dishes like tze char style and main dish meals (like rice and noodles). When you scan to order, it also showed Set Meals for 2 people which is something I would try next time I’m back.

The menu was in English, but some of the items are direct translations so Googling helped us to understand what each dish was.

Note that the prices listed on the menu are not inclusive of GST and Service Charge.

Apparently they also offer delivery services, so if you’re ever craving or thinking of trying Burmese food at home, you can contact them.

This was my first time trying Burmese food so this is a first-timer’s review of the dishes we tried.

What We Tried

Pickled Tea Leaves Salad ($8.90)

pickled tea leaf salad

Known as Lahpet Thoke, this salad is one of Myanmar’s most iconic dishes. It had so many different textures with a combination of fried garlic, shrimp, nuts, soft tea leaves and cabbage.

The tea leaves are fermented and have a salty earthy flavour. It kind of reminded me of Chinese olive vegetables (gan lan cai). Personally, I felt it was too salty and didn’t know how to appreciate this dish but I highly recommend giving it a try on your own and deciding whether you like it or not!

Mohinga ($9.90)

mohinga

Read online that Mohinga is the unofficial national dish of Myanmar, so of course we had to try it. Mohinga is a fish-based rice noodle soup that’s often eaten for breakfast.

The bowl of noodles were nice and warm. Served with a hard boiled egg and yellow bean fritters which paired really nicely with the red broth. Although the broth looked really red, it was actually pretty light.

Coconut Noodle Soup ($9.90)

Ohn No Khao Swe, or coconut noodle soup, is another dish I had heard about. The menu had a soup and dry version and we chose the soup version.

The dish wasn’t served piping hot, just warm but it still tasted nice. Served with a thick broth, hard boiled egg, and chicken cubes, it resembles curry noodles that we usually have in Singapore. However, this broth is richer and is stronger in the coconut milk flavour.

Fried Chicken with Chili ($10.50)

Another dish we tried was fried chicken with chilli. The crunchy chicken was served over a THICK bed of fried chilis and onions. It was served with a sweet chilli dip.

We really enjoyed this dish, because who doesn’t love fried chicken. It was a tad bit dry but was fine paired with the dip and our soupy noodle dishes.

Semolina Cake with Ice Cream ($8.00)

For dessert, we tried the Semolina Cake with Ice Cream. The warm semolina cake paired well with the cold ice cream. It was the first time I tried semolina cake and it was quite dense with a very palatable sweetness that was not overpowering.

Ambience & Service

We visited on a weekday night and the restaurant was busy but still easy to get a table. There was a mix of both locals and Burmese people dining when we were there. When we entered, the staff were really friendly and greeted us in Burmese.

Location

Inle Myanmar Restaurant is conveniently located in the basement of Peninsula Plaza near City Hall MRT. We had some difficulty figuring out how to get to the basement as we’re not familiar with Peninsula Plaza. Recommend to take the escalator from the entrance of Peninsula Plaza that is facing the side of Funan as it will bring you down directly to the entrance of the entrance.
