Recently visited Johor Bahru over the weekend and decided to try out Nasi Ayam Kee Chup, a halal chicken rice spot in JB. Can’t remember exactly how I found out about this place, but probably stumbled across it on Google Maps or Instagram.

ToggleAbout Nasi Ayam Kee Chup
According to other blogs online, it seems that the shop has been in operation since 2020. Located along the roadside, this shop has a nostalgic coffee shop interior. They specialise in one dish only, nasi ayam kee chup – that their stall is named after.
In Malay, ‘nasi ayam’ means chicken rice and ‘kee chup’ soy sauce. Ordering is easy as they only sell 1 item and you can choose to add rice or add chicken.
Delicious Halal Chicken Rice
The chicken thighs are marinated in plastic buckets and fried in batches in the space outside of the shop. There are self-service stations to get chilli sauce and additional soy sauce. There was also a self-service drink that looked like tea but as we ordered Milo, we didn’t find out what the free drink was.
Each plate of nasi ayam kee chup is served with a bowl or soup and some cucumbers & lettuce. Portion size is quite big, especially the amount of rice given. The chicken was flavourful on the outside, but I felt that it was not marinated long enough to fully absorb throughout the chicken. But I could dip it with the soy sauce from the self-service station. They only serve chicken thigh and so it’s not boneless like the typical chicken rice in Singapore.
As for the rice, it was flavourful and well-cooked. Several other customers ordered extra plates of rice!!
Crowd & What to Expect
We arrived around 1pm on a Sunday and there was a queue outside even though it was drizzling. Highly recommend bringing an umbrella if you intend on visiting as there is no shelter when queueing since this shop is by the road side. Because of how famous it is, this place is eat-and-go and not suitable if you are looking for a place to chill and chat after.
Getting Here
The road that the shop is located on was extremely congested when we visited with a jam that extended quite long. We alighted our Grab earlier and took a 10 minute walk to the place.
When we were leaving, the road remained congested and it was difficult to get a Grab. However, the restaurant is located within walking distance to JB City Square Mall & CIQ. We ended up taking a 10-15 minute walk there instead of trying to get a Grab from the shop.
If you’re coming by car, there is a large parking area right beside the shop but it is not free.
Service
Although there was a queue when we arrived, it moved relatively quickly and the staff seated patrons with efficiency. Tables were cleared fast and our food was served in no time.
