The first time I heard about Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine was when I overheard someone saying it was nice while queuing for dessert at Ah Chew’s in Bugis.
Since then, I’ve noticed several Xiang Xiang outlets opening in many heartland malls I’ve visited such as Seletar Mall, Pasir Ris Mall and Causeway Point in Woodlands. Seems that it is becoming more popular lately, but Xiang Xiang has been around since 2009!
I’ve been visiting the restaurant more regularly as I really quite enjoy the food and want to try new dishes after each visit.

About Xiang Xiang
Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine seems to be known for its bold and rich flavours, using ingredients such as garlic, peppers and their Wu Chang rice which is cooked in small batches.
The rice is pre-portioned into bottles and made with exactly a bottle of filtered water each time. At every outlet, there is an area where multiple rice cookers are on display with the bottles of water and rice.
You can order rice by the bowl or if you’re coming in a bigger group, they have the option of a pot served from the rice cooker directly!
Free Snacks & Ice Cream
Another thing it is known for is free snacks and ice cream! Unfortunately, the first time I visited Xiang Xiang at the Seletar outlet the snack bar was completely empty 🙁 but on subsequent visits to other outlets the snack bar was filled.
The restaurant is decorated with posters highlighting the ingredients in their signature dishes, which makes for a fun read while enjoying the food.
Menu Highlights & Dishes Review
I’ve been progressively trying new dishes and will update the page with my thoughts 🙂
All the dishes come in fixed sizes so it’s better to come in a bigger group if you want to try out different dishes. There is member and non-member pricing and joining as a member was free when I visited. They also offer the option of pre-purchasing credits if you dine at Xiang Xiang often.
They have 3 signature meat dishes at Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine:
- 18 Second Angus Beef Stir Fry
- Hunan Stir Fry Pork
- Golden Broth Sour & Spicy Fish
Of the three, the 18 Second Angus Beef Stir Fry is hands down my favourite!
18 Second Angus Beef Stir Fry
My favourite dish at this restaurant! Usually I avoid ordering sliced beef dishes as I’m not a fan of chewy beef slices. Was hesitant to try it but ordered it anyway as it was their signature dish. The beef is so tender with a delicious buttery flavour. Since it is served over a small candle, the dish is kept warm throughout our dining time.
If you eat beef, highly recommend ordering this! We always order this dish each time we’re back at Xiang Xiang!

Update 1 Jan 2025: I visited Xiang Xiang 2 more times recently and found that they have changed the dish slightly.
The coriander (xiang cai) is no longer mixed into the dish, which is good news for all coriander haters. But for people who like coriander, it means that there is much less of it in the dish now. (personally i prefer coriander)
Another significant change is that the dish is way more spicy the past 2 times at both the Bugis & Woodlands outlet. So I’m thinking it wasn’t a one-off thing but a standardised change across outlets.
From the picture, you can tell they’re adding much more chili into the dish. Not sure why they made these changes because the dish was great as it was before. It’s not as good as before anymore 🙁 the spice over powers the beef flavour.
Hunan Stir Fry Pork
Another one of their signature dishes, the Hunan stir fry pork is made with Iberic black pork. It’s quite nice as well with a good mix of fats and lean meat. It came with something that looked like mushroom caps which we found out from the poster that it was a special Yunnan white fungus.

Golden Broth Sour & Spicy Fish
My favourite part about this dish is the balanced, sour and very mildly spicy broth that pairs well with their Wu Chang rice. It really complements the other stir fried dishes by helping to cut through the grease. However, if I had to choose a dish of the 3 signature ones, it would be the angus beef stir fry!

Golden Cordyceps Chicken Soup
This is a hearty chicken soup served in a ceramic pot. I love soups and this was a really well balanced soup. If you’re not feeling like oily dishes, this is what you should order.
It came with generous amounts of cordyceps and a chicken leg. The meat was super tender and fell off the bone easily! A good option to have especially if dining with kids. It’s something i’ll definitely crave on a cold day.
Serving size is quite big for this, definitely enough for sharing among 4-6 people. We had to take away the leftovers as it would be a waste of good soup.

Dual Pepper Spicy Chicken Cubes
This dish was nice, but nothing to shout about. Chicken cubes served with green and red chili peppers, garlic and chopped lotus root. The lotus root, garlic and chicken blend together and look quite similar. For me, it was not really spicy at all.

Dual Spicy Pepper Fish
The dual spicy pepper fish was really good with sea bass that was tender and soaked in delicious spicy sauces. The actual chilis aren’t as vibrant as pictured in the menu but it still tasted good.
Similar to other dishes served here at Xiang Xiang, the sauce is VERY oily and I wouldn’t eat it with rice as it is more oily than saucey. It still went well with the fish though. I preferred this much more than their suan cai yu dish which is a signature but it could be personal preference as I love whole grilled fish compared to slices.
There is a wait time of ~25 mins for this dish and it was communicated to us by the staff upon ordering.

- Pasir Ris
Claypot Garlic Shrimp
Served in a claypot, this dish is packed a ton of flavour from being covered in a generous amount of garlic. At Xiang Xiang, it seems like garlic is a free resource.
We enjoyed the flavour of this dish and mixed the garlic sauce in our rice. The prawns were not peeled completely so it was tiring to eat after awhile.

Refreshing Cucumber Delight
Can’t go wrong with cucumber salad (personal opinion). Especially since some of the dishes I like to order are fried, this really helps to cut the grease and makes me feel slightly healthier that I’m getting some greens in.
Cucumbers can be abit more smashed to absorb the flavour, but I still like it as it is.

Garlic Sauteed Lettuce
There aren’t many vegetable dishes to choose from here. This was 1 of the 2 vegetable options and it was pleasant with the restaurant’s favourite ingredient, garlic 🙂

Giant Ice Lemon Tea
Complete your meal with a huge cup of ice lemon tea! I feel like this is part of the Xiang Xiang experience and getting a cup makes me feel like a kid again.
Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine Outlets
Outlets I’ve visited are: Woodlands, Seletar Mall and Pasir Ris.
Last updated 1 Jan 2025. They have opened quite a number of outlets recently, recommend to double check Google Maps on the outlet nearest to you.
